During an uncertain economy, some people will stay at a job even if they truly aren't happy with it. Why? Because for the time being, they feel more comfortable knowing they have a steady job. But when the economy stabilizes, those unsatisfied employees usually leave for much greener pastures. Companies can end up losing some of their best employees especially if they're not motivating, utilizing or recognizing them.
That's where an employee recognition program comes in.
Most people might think that it's really not hard to pass out certificates and prizes. But an employee recognition program is much more than ribbons and smiley face stickers. Its purpose is to let employees know they truly are valued in the workplace. These programs are an excellent way to boost morale in the workplace, and could possibly help you retain great workers.
Martiz Research asked employees, who were completely satisfied with their company's recognition programs, how they felt about other facets of their jobs. The study showed that these employees were not only more satisfied with their jobs, they were more likely to remain with the company and more likely to recommend their workplace to others than employees who aren't happy with their recognition programs. The study also showed that employees satisfied with their recognition program are more likely to invest in their company and feel more valued as an employee*.
So how can you ensure that your employee recognition program runs as smoothly as possible, and is valued by your employees? One of the things you can do is make sure employees know the specific behaviors or actions that will be recognized. It's also crucial that all employees are eligible to participate in the employee recognition program. You don't want any of your employees to feel slighted. If they do, they will have even more reason to not be loyal to your company. You want them to feel welcome and remain on board.
The last thing you can do is reward employees soon after the time of their accomplishment. This lets them know you are aware of their hard work. It also helps to reinforce the positive behavior you are trying to encourage among your employees.
