Networking With Confidence
By Chi Chi Okezie

Professionals strive to be successful in every area of their lives whether it is in their business or family lives. When it comes to business life, you can expect business people to spend a lot of time developing their skills and character for their career endeavors. It is no surprise that many professionals are leaning towards networking as a tool for developing professionalism, gaining resources and developing key relationships for economic and social gain. One of the key components to a successful networker is confidence. Confidence is a shining light that attracts clients and referrals and can exponentially build your image or brand. How can professionals identify key ways of being confident at networking events? How can professionals find unique ways to increase and build on their confidence while networking? How can professionals use confidence as a pathway for future networking success?

Confidence comes in many shapes and sizes. The first step to developing your confidence is to know your personality type. Professionals should learn how they best interact with others. Making a list of personality strengths and weakness is a great way to identify your personality type. When you have identified your three biggest strengths, use those as fuel for initiating conversations and making a good first impression with other business counterparts. Knowing who you are and how you conduct business is definitely a confidence plus.

The next step is to learn how your skills and abilities relate to your profession or career. What makes you the best lawyer in your office or company? What makes you the most recognizable person on your team? How were you able to lead in sales this month in your company or organization? These factors can enlighten your business counterpart and spark a variety of interest. People will be more interested in who you are than what you sell or what you do.

The final step in showing confidence while networking is to be familiar with up to date information about your field of work. Being knowledgeable about your business is the best way to gain trust and loyalty with new and old customers and clients. People need to know valuable and correct information from the right source. As a professional in your industry, you can position yourself as an expert in your field. This will not only increase your visibility but will also reinforce your brand. The best ways to be knowledgeable about your industry is to join professional groups, subscribe to trend magazines, attend trade shows/conferences. As a professional you can do your own research, write articles or blogs and newsletters with important information.
