Five Important Qualities of a Successful Franchise Venture
By Tl Kleban

I know a lot of people looking to get into business for themselves. Overwhelmingly, they are all looking into buying into a franchise system but aren't too sure if they have what it takes to become one. So many tell me they would love to sit down with the leading franchisors and ask them what exactly are they looking for in a franchisee? With a little hard work, you too can easily succeed as a franchisee.

Remember that while you are looking for the right franchise opportunity, those same franchise companies are also looking for prospective business owners that have the best chance for success. You need to remember that franchises don't all require the same qualities in a franchisee. There is a good amount different attributes which all are found in successful franchisees. Here are a few qualities that all successful franchises share:

  • Be a supervisor, not a dictator - The key job of a supervisor is be just that. Sure you have to give out task and responsibilities to your employees, but you also can't just walk away from everything once that's done. You need to oversee that those tasks are completed up to your expectations. Supervising, believe it or not, requires the more time and effort on your part that if you had just done the job yourself.
  • Set goals and achieve them - No matter what type of business you are in, they all share the same goals. They all are required to meet standards, deadlines, output demands, and other business aspects. How else do you think companies make money and grow? I know that some businesses it can take anywhere from months to years to achieve the right balance between setting your goals and then achieving them. Franchises that find this balance will succeed well past their growth stage of operations.
  • Keep a positive attitude - You will not succeed as a franchise without an overall positive attitude about things. You will be faced with a number of challenging questions such as how will succeed in the business world and do you feel that you have what it takes to succeed. You must ask yourself all of these types of questions and if you don't have a positive answer for all of them then you better think twice about what you are about to do. However, if you do think you can answer those questions with a yes, then you know you will make it and so will your franchise.
  • Hire good workers - Without a good workforce, your business will not succeed. You need to hire workers that have the same pride and determination in your business as you do. To do this, you can only hire the best candidates for the job and nothing less. If you are not happy one of your employees and they need a change in attitude, you need to nip it in the bud through disciplinary action or terminating their employment. The people that for you represent you and your business and you shouldn't expect anything but professionalism.
  • Organize - A business's sole goal is to make enough money to to open their doors the following day. So much of this is dependent on how well you organize all of your duties as a franchise owner. It is very important for you to remain organized and focused on the daily goals in order to be successful in the long run.
