The Complete Guide To Deciding If A Franchise Is Right For You
By Mark A. Abrahams

I am sure that if you are reading this article then you are either considering buying a franchise or you would like to do so in the future. It has a really good appeal. You buy into an existing franchise which is a proven business model. For many owners this builds a sense of security as you do not have the risk of a business model that may not work.

I also had this exact same hope. To me the franchise world seemed to have all the answers. It was at this stage that I started attending franchise exhibitions. There were a few that I was interested in. I found out how much capital I required for each of them. I did not have the money so I also found out about how to go about borrowing the money. For most of them it required a significant amount of investment. Soon I realized that this was a very important decision that could not be decided hastily.

It was at this stage that I started talking to people to find out more about it. There were a few restaurants and fast food places that I frequented a lot. I was very friendly with the managers. I asked them a lot of questions and the answers that I received from them was very surprising. Most of them were earning a decent amount from their business and experiencing a comfortable living. At least that was very comforting as the franchise business was a proven model that was very likely to work for you.

However, the big disadvantage was that very few had any time for them self. Most were working very long hours. Also if you have a long lease it is best to negotiate it as a percentage of the profits. One owner complained that the landlord promised him a much higher volume of traffic. His first year was terrible as he spent most of his earnings paying the rent. When it was time to renegotiate the lease he made it a percentage of the profits.

I also found out that there were a lot of unexpected expenses that you had to deal with so you had to make sure that you had a bit extra to cover these in case they happened. If you do not find any of the things that I have mentioned especially working long hours in a store unappealing then probably this model is right for you.
