Managing Human Resources: Eight Golden Lessons for a Smart Boss
By Radharenu Ganguly

The knowledge itself cannot be managed but rather it can be captured and converted into an asset, which then is turned into a commodity used to boost profits and drive the growth initiatives of a company. Here I shall discuss about one such knowledge, which I acquired from my shop floor experience during my long professional career. This is all about HR solutions to basic human relation issues, which I believe can also be converted into an asset of a company if properly implemented. Here are eight golden lessons that I learned, which are realistic, practical and easy to implement, which every Smart Boss needs to know as HR solutions to basic human relation issues he is to deal at the workplace.

1. Remember the names of your workers and call them by their names. It indicates that you are genuinely interested.

2. Make the jobs of your workers more interesting to break the monotony. Rotate your workers where-ever possible, explain one or two things as to how they are contributing to the company's success or crack a joke occasionally.

3. People often simply want to get things off their chests. Therefore, keep on listening to the workers' occasional outburst and don't answer back! In nine cases out of ten the workers will leave your room perfectly happy and satisfied.

4. Desire for appreciation is insatiable for most of us. As a smart Boss, therefore, notice and appreciate even ordinary things about your workers. Praise someone's good job not once only but mention it again and again and again.

5. Your small human touches can make all the difference between high and low morale of your workers. A smart Boss notices even a pimple on his worker's face and asks him about it. When back from leave he asks him how he got on, with a cheerful smile.

6. People crave for attention and they try to get it one way or other. As a smart Boss recognise it to get results in dealing with people. Don't ignore your workers. Even a few seconds of attention periodically can make all the differences.

7. Before he looks after his own needs, a smart Boss will see to the needs of his own workers and they in turn will do anything for him.

8. Encourage your workers to express what they think and keep open the lines of communication. This can help nipping many troubles in the bud, before a matter becomes serious.

If a company recognises the value of taking care of the HR solutions to these basic human relation issues, it can be miles ahead of competition and the benefits can be seen coming easily. It will have happy employees and happy employees are productive workers who can make it substantially easier for the company to achieve its wider strategic and operational goals.
