Developing leadership qualities is not rocket science. Given the right attitude, the right knowledge and the right challenge, you can work towards developing your leadership qualities. Here are several tips to help you do just that:
1. Know yourself. A lot of people go through life without truly understanding themselves. As Socrates said, "the unexamined life is not worth living." So you better know yourself so you can understand how to motivate yourself and lead others.
2. Know your passion. If you know what you are passionate about, you can easily pursue these and lead a fulfilling life. You can also choose the right path for yourself and lead others to do so.
3. Know your skills and abilities. What can you do excellently? What abilities set you apart? Are you average, mediocre or excellent? Getting a good grasp of your skills and abilities will help you focus on those areas that you need to improve on.
4. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Awareness of your strengths and weaknesses can help you get a realistic picture of yourself. This way, you can avoid pursuits that could expose your weaknesses instead of your strengths.
5. Get busy. Not look busy. When you start working, you are actually working towards getting things done. Always remember to work smarter and not just harder. Don't look busy, that is reserved for lazy people who are looking at Facebook instead of working on their next project.
6. Go to where the action is. Don't be in the background. Rush to where the action is. That is where you can hone your challenge and bring out 100% of your skills, talents and abilities.
7. Don't hesitate to make decisions and take risks. When you risk failure, you just might risk success. Those who are afraid of failures are afraid to take risks. Those who are afraid to take risks will not win at all!
8. Read good books. Get some good books on leadership. For a start, you can check the books of John Maxwell, Stephen Covey, Seth Godin, Keth Blanchard and a host of other leadership authors.
9. Apply what you read. Don't just read leadership books. Apply the principles that you read. If it will help you, focus on one leadership principle a month and implement it in your workplace.
10. Get a mentor or a buddy. Talk with a work buddy. Help each other in developing your leadership qualities. Build each other up and work towards becoming better.
