Are Leaders Born or Made?
By Edvard Kurnik

The debate of Born Leader versus Made Leader has been going on for centuries. This debate still continues but we now know that both the sides are partially correct.

The only thing a person must to have in order to become a leader is intelligence. He must also be smart enough. We know that leaders may not be the smartest people in group but he should be able to get the assigned job done. People usually grow up with certain characteristic and these characteristics matter in case of leadership.

A grown up person can help other people to achieve goals. This is what a leader is supposed to do. They are supposed to help their subordinates evolve and develop. These are some qualities which are sometimes inborn in some people. Stern and intrinsic will formulate a group which is required by a leader.

Some people have a natural ability which makes them take initiatives in leadership. The will to make decisions is also one trait which is inherent in some people and proves to be an essential quality of a leader.

While some qualities needed for good leadership may be natural to some people it is important to note that all skills needed for leadership are not present in any individual. He has to learn some skill on his own by making deliberate efforts.

Since all the properties needed for good leadership are not inborn in any individual everyone has learn the ropes of this business. That is why it is stressed that leaders are made and are not born.

Anyone willing to become a leader can learn the basics of leadership. But in the gist of all this is that all the leadership cannot be taught in the actual sense.

Mainly leadership is learned through apprenticeship, an estimated 80 percent of leadership stuff is learned while doing the leadership job. To watch and to imitate leaders helps a lot. Aspiring leaders choose their role models and find their own mentors.

Mentors can also help resolve situations. The improvement of a leader always happens through the feedback and its analysis. This feedback is usually sought from subordinates, peers, and bosses.

They alter their behavior as per the feedback. All these things are to be learned and cannot be inherent in any person.

Trying different things out and then criticizing the performance is one way to learn ways of good leadership. This attribute is never intrinsic and has to be learned. No one is born as leader. Some of inborn traits can be potential material to become a good leader.

Only right stimuli are needed to become a good leader in such cases. Whether a person born with leadership qualities will become a leader or not greatly depends on the circumstances. If he does not get proper stimulus he will not become a leader in spite of his inbuilt qualities.

On the other hand, a person willing to become a leader can attain his/her goal by learning the skills needed and cultivating the qualities that are essential to become a good leader
