Leaders - Lead by Yourself
By Thomas Cummins

Leaders know what it takes to be alone and they know what it is like to be surrounded by a great team when it is time to move ahead. One of the greatest examples of leadership comes from the Old Testament in the Bible when David came to fight Goliath. His brother taunted him about being a lowly shepherd boy and being truly blessed with the spirit of God; David turned and walked away from his brother because he knew that the real battle was more important than wasting his energies on something that was going to detract him from his destiny.

Proverbs 20.3 speaks about being a peacemaker and in essence many arguments would not fall into catastrophic failures if common sense had prevailed and one party walked away. The bottom line is we need to ask ourselves do we extend unnecessary energies on trivial discourses.

A great example is being cut off by another motorist and losing ones temper when 5 minutes later that very motorist will not be in your life space. Another is someone grabbing the beautiful shirt you were about to lay claim to, there are other beautiful shirts and when you keep calm you may find the better bargain soon after.

There are so many examples of where we extend unnecessary energies that deplete our store and leave us barren when opportunities present themselves.

Relationships are a union that came together for a common purpose and part and parcel of this venture is working in harmony together. This may sound all pie in the sky but realistically could you imagine if great companies fell apart because of disputes between the management team that they refused to resolve. This is where true leadership shows its real colours.

Leaders are the best servants because they lead by example not by dictates and this applies to all of us in our respective domains. Police officers have been forged into a sphere that is a far cry from the friendly policeman of decades ago because we have all become so intolerant and way too sensitive.

As a special favour to your circle pay attention to the triggers that catapult your temper and realize that by praying graciously with tons of praise to God and following a course of self improvement you will recognise that God will hear your detractors and your prayers will allow God to bless you because of them.

A battle irrespective of intensity is pointless if there are no spoils and worthless if they remove you from the clarity of the leader you have been constructed to be. The blessings you refuse to accept will be handed to someone who is receptive to them. A good leader is receptive and encourages others to be receptive to blessings and in turn God blesses them a hundredfold.

Everyone needs self improvement and those who scoff at it are still in the caveman sphere and all we may do is pray for their conversion and meanwhile back at the ranch we attend to our own improvements and who know by osmosis they may become inspired.
