Leadership Skills That You Can Live By
By Seth Czerepak

You've probably been told that leadership skills are something you'll need to have to move up in your organization. Perhaps you've been told that they can help you in whatever career you choose. Maybe because of ambition or just plain 'ol fear you've come in search of some answers. Regardless of your motivation, I have something to share with you and I think you'll learn a great deal from it.

Leadership isn't this mystical concept. It's not mysterious or exotic, either. Leaders don't have to be charismatic to be successful. It's not about saying something profound at just the right time. It's about caring and supportive behaviors, focused on others and moving forward towards a well-defined destination.

Leadership skills don't have to be technical or systematic. I believe they do have to come from a solid foundation of principle, however. Some say leadership is a calling, but you may find yourself thrust into a leadership role out of necessity. Does that mean you're doomed for failure because leadership came looking for you rather than the other way around?

Hardly.

Do you lead your life in a way that is consistent with your core beliefs? If your answer is yes, you're displaying authenticity, one of the most important leadership skills out there. From authenticity comes credibility and eventually trust. When you've built trust, you can cut through bias, perception and distraction and help your followers see reality in a more accurate and constructive way. This will help you show them "the big picture" in a way they can translate into action.

Don't think of this just in a work context. If you have children, you're a leader to them and living by principles is even more important at home than in the working world. Do you participate in stewardship activities at church? You're a leader in your congregation just by stepping forward to walk in the path of Jesus Christ. How about in your community? Charities, homeowners associations, school? It's all relevant. Stay true to what you believe in and you'll be exhibiting one of the most important leadership skills you can have.

Now back to work, just for a minute. Perhaps you're seeing leadership skills in a new light and maybe they seem a bit more attainable than you'd thought before you read this. Good, but you're not out of the woods yet. There's one key question I need you to ask yourself. Are your actions consistent with what you believe in?

Not sure? You'd be surprised, or maybe you wouldn't, at how many people really answer "I don't know," or "No, they're not". Admit it now because you can learn all the technical leadership skills you want but if your true character is in hiding, you'll experience more frustration than success.

Why?

The more you allow the pressures of the outside world to dictate how you think, what you do, and most importantly how you see yourself - the more you lose sight of who you really are.

Your free e-book, "The Human Condition", was created to help you begin to understand how these outside pressures have affected your thinking and helped you create bad habits that must be broken to effectively use the leadership skills you want to learn. Download it...give it a try and make it count.
