Leadership - The 7 Benefits of Focusing on Results
By Duncan Brodie

Leaders are tasked with delivering results for their organisation which leads to personal success. When people think of getting results, they often imagine the leader as being someone who has disregard for people. Yet the reality is that leaders who get results know the importance of people in getting results. So what are the benefits of focusing on results?

Benefit 1: Leaders get clear on the destination

Leaders who focus on results are crystal clear on the vision for their organisation. They take the time to determine where they want to take their business, use their imagination and unlock their creativity. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being highest), where are you in terms of being clear on the destination for your business?

Benefit 2: Leaders have goals and milestones

Those leaders that have a clear vision for their business will set goals (outcomes) and milestones (checkpoints) to move them towards achieving their vision. These goals and milestones will lead to actions steps which when implemented create results.

Benefit 3: Leaders discover obstacles and threats

As leaders set goals and milestones they will start to uncover some of the barriers or challenges to achieving these goals and milestones. It might be gaps in skills, experience, knowledge, in your team, in your technology to mention just a few.

Benefit 4: Leaders develop strategies to overcome obstacles and threats

Leaders who have a strong focus on results will not give up as soon as they hit a challenge or obstacles. They will start looking at other ways of achieving the desired outcomes. They may even come up with better options as a result.

Benefit 5: Leaders don't waste time chasing lost causes

When leaders look for strategies to overcome obstacles, they might discover that with hindsight a particular goal or outcome is not as lucrative as they thought. Rather than wasting time chasing lost causes, they do an assessment of the pros and cons and if letting go is the right option, they let go. How many lost causes are you expending time and energy on as a leader?

Benefit 6: Leaders learn

Leaders who have a big focus on results are always taking action. By taking action they get feedback on what is working and what is not. This learning lays foundations for future successes.

Benefit 7: Leaders recognise that organisational success leads to personal success

Leaders know that if their organisation succeeds, they achieve a lot of personal success, recognition and opportunities. They become known as the people, who make a difference, can turnaround failing organisations, can make things happen. They come into the radar of those looking for successful people such as head hunters, magazines, television, radio, newspapers to name just a few.

Bottom line - focusing on results is the best thing you can do to achieve greater success as a leader. So what do you need to do differently to focus on results?
