The Best Leader is One Who Does Not Lead
By Awdhesh K Singh

Just visualize a scene where you see a very strong giant size person, almost superman, is pulling a large number of people by force. These people are all chained together. These people are trying to run away from the giant person and trying their best to open the clutches but they are controlled by a large number of servants of the Giant, who are using slashes to whip anyone who try to break the shekel. Everyone is sweating, the Giant sweating the most. There is tremendous hatred in the air and the chained people in their heart want to kill the giant man and his men. After few hours, the giant man is able to bring these chained people to his office which itself is made like a jail. These people are forced inside the house for doing their daily work and the gate of the jail is locked by a big lock. You can't see anything now but you can hear the sounds of shouting, scolding, cries and beating of people from outside.

Now try to visualize another situation. Here you see a person moving happily on the road followed by hundreds of people. He is just singling a song and a number of his men are playing some beautiful music. The people following this singing man and they are all dancing and moving with him in unison. They have all arrived in a building which has no boundary. Everyone goes happily inside amid the sound of laughter. You can't see inside but you can hear the sound of joy and laughter standing outside his office.

The above two imaginary situations are something we see and hear everyday. They are not merely imagination but a reality. In both ways, the work is performed. The first method is however, very "Effortful" as it requires lots of effort by the giant person and his men to get the work done from the unwilling people. They, however, work under fear. No one can threaten many people for long time. There is only a limited work that can be done by the giant person since he being a human being has limited physical power to pull people against their will.

The singing man in the second scene is actually a leader. He leads his followers and gets the job done happily. They all enjoy the work and the company of the leader. The leader can perform even the biggest job possible since there is no limit to the number of people who can follow him. He does not have to pull anyone. They all are pulled towards him automatically.

Yet, can we call this singling man the best leader?

Most people may think yes as they can't visualize the limitation of this leader.

You can easily visualize that the singing man has only created followers who are limited by the capacity of the leader. No one can overtake this man. If the leading man falls sick, everyone stops. If the leading man dies, the followers are scattered away as they do not know where to go and what to do.

No imagine a situation, when the leading man actually teaches all the people what he knows and trains them in all the skills he knows. He also tells them the ultimate goal where he intends to reach. He also helps them in finding the path and travel on it. Now, the people have no need to follow him. He needs not lead now. He can stand in the middle, he can stand after the last man and yet the people shall be moving in unison to their destination. Even when he sleeps, the people are marching ahead. Even he is sick, people can advance in the path. Even when he dies, people can still reach to their destinations happily.

Such a person is an ideal leader because he does not have to lead. The followers of even the greatest leaders like Alexander the Great or Napoleon scattered and reached nowhere after the death of their leaders. Yet there are very few leaders who continued to lead people even after their death. Jesus Christ and Buddha are leading billions of people even today. They are the best leaders.
