What it Really Takes to Do Leadership Coaching
By Vance Carroll Y Dugas

Who can perform the art of leadership coaching? This was the question that a close friend of mine suddenly tossed at me while I was trying to explain to him the reason why many managers are very good at managing their employees. And without any 2nd thoughts I was prepared to offer him my answer.

The answer was quite simple, it was "everybody". Indeed, everybody or anyone is capable of doing his or her own type of leadership coaching. Nonetheless, here is the catch; to do it isn't that easy. Being a leadership coach isn't as simple as 1 + 1 = 2. By definition a leadership coach is somebody that coaches leaders or managers to enhance development in all areas and corners of their career. Normally, a coach is going to be specializing in certain areas of leadership which is based on their very own individual educational background and expertise. Decision makers or executives can gain from the outside as well as impartial point of view which a leadership coach can bring to their career and more especially, to their business style.

One matter that somebody who wants to be a leadership coach needs to do is choose. She or he should decide on the kind of coaching, or leadership coaching to practice. An advise which is frequently given to a person is to look at their past business experiences, educational background, and number and type of training, seminars and forums attended. This is done to find out the areas that the individual can best lend his or her expertise to. The business plan should be crafted around the areas of expertise.

Second, in order to really know the skills in a short period of time, a person can also go to a training program or even a school created for coaches and mentors. Let me again stress that training isn't a requirement a to become a leadership coach, however it can in fact aid in projecting a more professional figure. There's also coaching programs which can be found on the web for self-study. Additionally, by getting certifications, a person can show that he or she is serious about the client's career, and furthermore, certifications will also provide credibility.

The following is another idea, an individual may hire a coach that can help him/her to become one. By hiring a personal coach, it is possible to see what it is like to be coached from a client's perspective. With this you will have a perception of precisely what you like and dislike on the way other coaches operate. By being a client, an individual is given the inside look at the profession of coaching, and it can allow you to craft your coaching business in a way which you feel will best suit the clients. In addition, the hired coach may serve as a reminder to you to remain on the track of becoming a coach. The hired coach may also offer you practical advices about getting into the coaching business, being someone who has already faced many hurdles.

Finally, try to participate a coaching organization. By doing so, it'll provide you an access to further training opportunities in addition to networking with other coaches and potential referrals to clients. To be a coach you can self study. But if you wish to speed things up, you need a coach which will educate you in the art of leadership coaching.
